The University of Helsinki has been key and fundamental to the growth and development of the culture and country of Finland. The founding Charter of the University established in Turku in the year 1640, carries the signature of the underage Queen Christina, and is now kept at the University’s museum.
Research has shown that the University of Helsinki was founded in 1640, and is a member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU). It has fulfilled its goal to set up itself as one of Europe’s foremost multidisciplinary research Universities. The university’s core area is critical appraisal and its strength is principally in the fields of Science and education. Its major languages at the undergraduate, postgraduate and Doctoral level include Finnish, Swedish and English.
The Qs World University Ranking, in 2016-2017 rated Helsinki University as the 91st most prestigious university. Similarly, the World University ranking in 2016-2017 placed the University as the 91st most foremost.

The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Behavioural Sciences, Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Theology, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
The City Centre Campus houses the Arts and Social Sciences Faculty, while the Kumpula is known as Science Campus, Meilahti Campus is for Medicine and Viikki Campus for Life Sciences.
Cost of Living
Living expenses, for a month range from 700 to 1000 Euros hinging upon each student’s spending habits. Cost of rent in either student dormitory or residence hall cost 500 to 850 Euros per month. However students who are members of the Student’s Union are given discounts.
Masters and Bachelor students are to pay 101 Euros Student Union Membership fee which entitles them to the Finnish Student Health Services, Doctoral student are liable to pay 46 Euros for membership, but are precluded from the Student Health Services.
Bachelor and Master’s students under within some age range and living in selected areas of the country (Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen, Kereva, Kirkkonummi, Sipoo) are entitled to students’ discounts. Degree students are to register as permanent residents before student discount card are issued, Exchange students need to receive a certificate proving their student’s status before gaining access to the same services.
Students Financing Aid
International students can obtain Student grant in some instances from the social institution of Finland, if a student residence is considered permanent, residence is premised on some other status than a student.
European Union citizens can work in Finland without a work permit. International, Exchange and Degree students can work during their stay in Finland conditioned on some restrictions, the restrictions include nationality and nature of employment.
Cost of Tuition, Admission and Scholarship
Annual tuition fees for foreign language Bachelors and Masters Programmes have been newly introduced and will begin from the 1 of August 2017, this applies to citizens of non-European Union countries, the fees range from 10,000 to 25,000 Euros, the tuition fee comprises of Students Union Membership fee, entitles students to meal discount and reduction in transportation fares.
The University of Helsinki offers scholarship to students from non-European countries to help cushion the burden of the prescribed tuition fees, Master’s students in their second year of Master’s studies are also eligible for the scholarship, the scholarship is either full, partial or covers the cost of living expenses.
For Exchange students, universities in collaboration with the University of Helsinki send students nominations.The nominated students afterwards submit their applications online, and include the required documents in their application.
Decisions about acceptance are made by Faculties of the University of Helsinki. Acceptance information is available about 6 weeks after the application closes.Accepted Students receive an automatic acceptance e-mail from their host Faculty. Applications process for Doctoral students can range from two to four months.
The University of Helsinki also offers Master’s program for European Union, non-European Union citizens, Exchange students and International students.
The tuition fee for Master’s Program range from 13,000, 15,000 and 18,000 Euros per academic year. These fees do not however apply to Exchange, PhD students and citizens of the European Union, European Economic Area.
Persons who want to study a Doctoral Degree must make sure they are qualified to do so. They must either hold a Finnish Master’s Degree or a Master’s Degree that is comparable to a Finnish Master’s Degree (individuals who are eligible to apply for Doctoral studies in their home country can apply to Helsinki University). Language proficiency in Finnish, Swedish or English Language is compulsory for all applicants.
Students seeking to gain entry into the University must show evidence of language skills, this requirements is for all students. Through previous school, University education or standard language test. Types of standardized language skills test includes TOEFL with a minimum score of 79 (Internet-based), minimum score of 22 is required in the writing section. TOEFL (paper based) need a 580 score. Cambridge Advanced/Proficiency Examination require A, B, or C grade. For Academic Pearson Test of English a minimum score of 62 is required. University Degrees either Masters or Doctoral Degrees completed in English in any of the European Union countries, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand is acceptable to show proficiency in English language.
Students are to ensure completion of 30European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits in semester. One ECTS credit equals 27 hours of work, this includes lectures and homework. The workload is large and students are to meet up with expected targets.
