You can study for free in Holland by taking advantage of the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS). The scholarship program offers opportunity for international students wishing to study Irrespective of nationality you can benefit from this gold mine and use it to your advantage; onlystudents countries within the European Economic Area (EEA) are ineligible for this scholarship program.
Scholarships’ Program Description
The AMS program is offered to attract international students that are exceptional and show brilliance from all over the world.Students from certain countries however are exempted from this scholarships’ program; international students from around the world may apply except students from European Economic Area.If your nationality is outside the EEA,you may apply.It is permitted to supplement the scholarship with the Holland Scholarship too.The scholarship is collectively offered by the Ministry of Education,Culture and Science and other participating universities in Holland.

ELIGIBILITY
If you’re an international student and intend on applying for this scholarships’ program ensure you read through the eligibility rules stipulated below:
- Students who intend on applying must hold a non-EU/EEA passport and mustn’t be eligible for support under the countries’ system of study grants and loans.
- You must be fully admitted to a degree program at the University of Amsterdam.
iii. You must be a first time applicant to the University of Amsterdam; scholarships’ benefit does not extend to second time applicants to the university.
- You must be enrolled at the University of Amsterdam as a full time student in the same academic year the scholarship is awarded.
- You must comply with the Dutch visa regulations.
- Candidates may not receive a full coverage scholarship during the period of study under the AMS award.Candidates must notify the scholarships office when or if another scholarship is offered and accepted.
Criteria for selection
The scholarship program is highly competitive therefore the AMS is highly selective. Applicants will be considered based on academic merits such as grade average, letter of recommendation and motivation.
International students from over 190 countries may apply, except students from the EEA.

Number of Awardees per year
Over 125 students are granted this scholarship annually.
Duration of scholarship
All students considered for scholarship would receive scholarship covering the duration of the studies of their program. The award for 18months and 24 months programs will only be renewed if the student displays satisfactory progress in his/her education, continuation is not guaranteed if a student wishes to change program of study.
Benefits of Scholarship
The grant is valued around €6,000 – €21,500. It consists of €6,000, €9,000 or €12,000 grants, but awards are based on the overall comprehensive financial plan, which should demonstrate the extent of the need for additional funding.
Students should take note that the scholarship cannot be used as a (partial) tuition waiver; applicants must still pay the full amount of tuition due. Beneficiaries will receive grant in monthly installments.
Method of Application
Students intending to apply for the AMS must be fully admitted to a degree program at UvA before they can be considered for this scholarships’ award.The grants are awarded by the faculties and graduate schools individually, therefore procedure vary per faculty/school.

DEADLINE
Deadlines are different from one faculty or graduate school to the other, submissions should be made before 1st of March – June yearly. If you consider applying for the AMS Scholarship ensure to submit an application before 1st of April for September academic session, AND before1st of August for the February academic window.

Programs applied for may demand additional requirements such as academic qualities and language proficiency. Please visit the official website of the faculty of studies you applied for. Candidates must also not receive a full-coverage scholarship from other organization for the same period of study the AMS covers and must comply with the countries visa regulations.
