On daily bases, lots of scholarships are awarded by institutions, organizations, governments, charitable groups, individuals etc. These scholarships are given out to assist the low income students pursue their studies either in their home country or abroad. But sad to say that some of these scholarships go unclaimed. Most students shy away from applying to scholarships because they feel it’s usually hard to win a scholarship. Some on the other hand feel discouraged due to their poor grades. The fact remains that one can get a scholarship to study irrespective of his/her grades, gender, race etc.
In most cases, scholarship awarding bodies look beyond one’s grades. There are other things you have that might appeal to them like your essay, hobbies, motivations etc. I have seen may students with poor grades win scholarships as a result of the way they prepared their essays. These students were able to write convincingly on their motivations, hobbies, why they need the scholarship and how they will use it to develop their community.
In this article, I’m going to show you tips on how to apply for a scholarship and get it. If you adhere strictly to them, you will surely get an award to study abroad.
Prepare your essay on time
Start as early as possible to prepare your scholarship essay. There’s nothing wrong in producing up to five different drafts. As you are writing your essay, do not fail to include information like your academic achievements, career path, hobbies, motivations, work experience(if any), why you need the scholarship and how you will make use of the scholarship, if you are given.
Search and apply to many scholarships
Do not just apply to one scholarship. Apply to as many as you meet the requirements. You can search for scholarships on national dailies or by using the internet. I highly recommend the use of the internet as 90% of scholarships are advertised on the internet. You could use search engines like google.com, bing.com, ask.com to mention but a few. When searching, you may use keywords like undergraduate scholarships, commonwealth scholarships, engineering scholarships etc.
Apply with all required documents
Yes you will need to apply with all documents relevant to your scholarship application. The scholarship provider will list out documents you’ll need to submit with your application. Documents usually required for scholarship application include;
- Results and transcripts
- English language proficiency test results (TOELF or IELTS).
- Scholarship application form
- Reference letters
- Medical fitness test result
Apply before deadline
Your application should get to the scholarship provider before the stipulated deadline. Scholarship applications sent after deadline will not be considered. However, you will need to check the deadline of all advertised scholarships before you start your application.
If you follow these guidelines, you will surely apply for and win a scholarship to study anywhere in the world. I’m wishing you success in your application!
