Getting admitted into any university in Russia is in some way similar to getting admitted to any university in the world but with some differences which shall be highlighted below in a five steps order.
5 Steps to getting admitted to a Russian University for International Students
- CHOOSE A COURSE PROGRAMME
You need to determine your preferred course of study and ascertain if you will be the right fit or are qualified to take the course. It is very important that prospective international students determine the cost of choosing any course. Due to the Bologna process Russia is affiliated with, prospective students can choose either a four-year bachelor’s degree or a five-year specialist degree. It will be required after you’ve chosen your choice of course that you also fill an application Form from the Russian Education Center for African and Asian students.
This will later require that you submit a copy of:
• Your International Passport (with minimum validity of 2 years)
• Higher Secondary School Certificate (with subject details)
After the documents above must have been reviewed, you will afterwards be notified about your admission status. When admitted RECAS often will issue your admission letter in one working day.
2. INVITATION LETTER
In getting an invitation letter from any Russian University, the following documents are often requested.
• Duly filled Application Form
• Copy of International Passport (with a year minimum validity)
• Copy of School Certificate (with subjects detailed)
• Invitation Letter cost 400 USD and Courier charges 100 USD
You will still need to send these documents to RECAS but it will be after you have received your Acceptance / Admission Confirmation letter from them.
The Russian Federal Migration Service will issue invitation but it takes 35-45 days to issue the invitation letter.
After you must have been in possession of your invitation letter from “Russian Education Centre for African & Asian Students”, you will also need to contact the Russian embassy in your home country for necessary Visa arrangements.
Russian Visa Requirements
• International passport (valid for 2 years minimum)
• Application form (To be filled online at http://visa.kdmid.ru)
• Secondary school leaving certificate (To be attested by Ministry of Foreign Affairs or with an Apostille stamp)
• Aids/HIV test (Attested by Ministry of Foreign Affairs)
• Invitation letter (official) to be issued by Federal Migration Services of the Russian Federation through RECAS
• 2 Passport size Photographs (3.5 x 4.5)
After a visa has been issued, the RECA and the prospective school authority must be notified about the prospective student’s flight details. It is vital that you adhere to this instruction. Most students have been deported and sent back to their home country as a result of neglect of this piece of information.
5. ADMISSION AND COMMENCEMENT OF CLASSES
On arrival in Russia, students are required to bring along with them their original documents and their payment receipt of complete first year expenses paid.
Students are to do a full registration at their University within three working days after they have landed in Russian Federation territory.
On arrival in Russia, students are also expected to visit International department where complete documents are submitted including all first year charges.
Russian International Relations office will then complete the admission process including registration in 1-3 working days and after which you’re allowed to commence classes.
It is important to note that starting a programme is just as important as finishing it. It is very important that you determine early enough how you intend to pay for your tuition and study cost in general. Over the years, tuition has either been self-funded, parent or relation funded, government funded or funded through international institutions. You do not only determine the cost of tuition alone, it is necessary to determine your average cost of living as a student and make comparisons that will fit your budget.
With all these factors put in place, you are sure to enjoy your studies and student life in Russia!
