Graz, one of the most popular city in Europe and second largest city. Not only is it renowned for it’s vibrant cultural scenery but a huge inspiration to great academia for centuries. Great scientists like Johannes Kepler, Erwin Schrödinger and Ludwig Boltzmann are just a few who lived, studied, and worked in Austria’s second biggest city.
A lot of students keep flodding to Graz from different parts of the world particular from Europe and a handful from other continents. If you’re one or them, then you need to know the pros and cons of studying in Graz, their estimated tuition fee and cost of living.
Few days ago, i wrote an article about the tuition fee of Linz universities tuition fee which sum up to 726.72 EUR for non-EU students with an additional 18 EUR for Student Union. EU students on the other hand will have to pay only 18 EUR for the Student Union. Well, is the same for institutions in Graz. But most of the criteria that also influence the amout you pay while studying in Graz is your nationality, resident permit status, duration of used semester per field of study and many more factors.
If perhaps, you exceeded the non contributory period, you will only have to pay 363.30 EUR a semester in the additional admission period or 399.70 EUR in the additional admission period.
However, universities in Graz usually offer scholarships and grants which will be a relieve on your finance but such awards are usually on merit. You will have to work for it.
Cost of living
Like i always say, the cost of living in any part of the world lies hugely on your residency and the kind of lodging a student has, the kind of lifestyle and whether the students eats out or prepares meals at home. Nevertheless, the average or probably, the least expected for a student to spend within a space of one month is approximately 600 EUR for lodging, food and other personal expenses.
Going to a mid range restaurant to eat will cost you at least, 8-10 EUR, but what of the student canteen? An average meal in a student canteen cost 5 EUR and having a ‘memsastempel‘ (usually issued to students with low income) will cause them a price reduction for your sake.
You can find a student canteen(Mensa) at any of these places.
- UNI-Mensa, sonnenfelsplatz 1
- Tu-Mensa, Inffeldgasse 25
- Resowi-Cafeteria, Universitä tsstraBe 15
- Universität Graz, Vorklink-Buffet, Hurrachgasse 21
Trains, buses and taxi will definitely be your only option when gravelling to neighboring regions as an international student. Transport in Graz is very affordable and convenient because of the Nightline which operates between 12.0 am to 3.00 am. Although. For your safety, i won’t advice you don’t take on a Nightline journey.
One hour ticket ride cost 2.00 EUR. 24 hour ticket cost 5.00 and many other denominations.
