Finland is located in Northern Europe and borders countries like Sweden, Norway and Russia. The country has one of the most advanced educational systems in the world. Since education is funded by the government, all universities and institutes of higher learning are operating tuition free. This means that as a student, you are exempted from fee payment, even if you are an international student.
Today, I will be talking about free education in Finland, cost of living, admission requirements as well as application times and deadlines. But first, let’s briefly look at the cost of living in Finland, so you will know how much to budget as you are preparing for your study.
Cost of living in Finland
Cost of living in Finland is relatively high, but still approximately the same as in other EU countries. To live in Finland as a student, you should budget about 560 Euro per month. This amount covers the cost of accommodation, food, books, transport etc for one month. Note that when applying for student resident permit, international students( non-EU/EEA students) will need to show that they have 6720 Euro per year, which is the estimated living cost in Finland for one year.
Admission requirements
To study at the undergraduate/bachelor’s level, you will need to provide certified copies of your official school leaving certificates showing that you are eligible to apply for higher education in your home country.
Similarly, for postgraduate/masters level program or doctoral program, candidates should include officially certified copies of earlier academic degrees in their application. If you are a holder of HNC/HND type of degree, you are advised to visit the FAQ on diploma evaluation here to see if your degree qualifies you to study in Finland.
Application times and deadlines
If you are applying to a university, the application times and dedlines depend on the university and program. But in most cases, the annual application period to university degree programs starts from mid-November and ends in January. Please for more details about application times and deadlines, visit the admission official website here. You can also search for courses on the study program database here.
