All universities require that students meet a certain minimum requirement for the program they hope to study. In this article, I’m going to highlight the minimum requirements students must meet to study in major universities of the world.
I’m starting with the undergraduate study. To study at the undergraduate level, students are required to have graduated from the high school and acquire the high school certificate. A minimum of five O’level credit passes in related discipline is usually needed. Some schools might require additional qualification like Cambridge certificate, before one could be given a study offer.
Postgraduate study requirements
To study at the postgraduate level, students will be expected to possees the following;
Degree result and transcript
This is usually result obtained from undergraduate study together with transcript which shows details of all the courses you did during your undergraduate study together with the grades. Most universities allow a minimum of second class honors for postgraduate study.
A statement of purpose/admission essay:
This is a piece of writing about yourself, ambition, study plan, achievements etc. This is usually needed by universities to asses the students preparedness for the program he/she applies to study. As the admission committee reads through your essay, the can deduce who you are, your grades and how qualified you are for the postgraduate study. However, it has to be properly written as it is your chance to talk directly to the admission committee, and make yourself stand out from among thousands of similar qualified candidates.
English language proficiency certificate
This could be a Toefl, Ielts results that shows the grades and level of your English language at the international level. Its usually required if a student is not a native English language speaker, for example, if student is not from countries like, USA, England, Switzerland etc. He/she will be required to present an English language certificate showing his/her level of spoken and written English.
Reference letters are letters you obtain from people attesting to your good conduct and preparedness for the postgraduate program. This letters can be written by your lecturers who know you well.
These are the four major documents needed to apply for any postgraduate program abroad. At times, some schools may require additional documents like, photocopy of international passport and additional qualifications like GRE, GMAT, SAT etc. If you have any question about this post, feel free to use the comment box bellow.
