It is a dream for all graduate and doctoral students to get a fellowship programme from one of the top organisations. A fellowship programme not only helps research students and doctorates financially, it also motivates them to go further in their line of academics. Fellowships also help researchers to make a healthy career move by giving them the opportunity to show their skills in research and development.
Fellowships can be either internal i.e. provided by the institution in which the student is studying or researching, or it can be external, which is provided by an organisation. There are companies also who provide fellowships to research students to work in their laboratories. Here in this article I have listed some of the prominent fellowship programmes for those who are studying abroad in Europe:
- Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowship
Named after the famous Nobel Prize winning Polish scientist, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actionssupport researchers at all stages of their careers, irrespective of nationality.There are two types of Individual Fellowship – European Fellowships and Global Fellowships.
This fellowship programme is for the best, most promising individual researchers from anywhere in the world and is applicable for only experienced researchers.
The funding covers living, travel and family costs and is awarded to the university, research centre or the company where you are doing yourresearch.
- Max Weber Fellowship
Started in 2006, it is one of the largest international postdoctoral fellowship programmes in Social Sciences and Humanities in Europe. The fellowship is funded by the European Commission.
The programme is located in University Institute of Florence and gives the Fellows access to some of the best research facilities in the world.
The basic grant received by the Fellows is € 2,000 per month and family allowances is added as applicable.A household allowance of € 300 per month is paid to Fellows with a partner if the partner lives with them in Florence and on condition that the partner’s income is not over € 2,000 per month.Travel reimbursement for one return trip from the Fellows’ home town to Florence is given which does not exceed € 1,200.
- Fernand Braudel Senior Fellowships
This programme is for established academics with an international reputation to pursue their research in European Union. This Fellowship lasts for up to ten months in one of the EUI’s four departments.
Candidates of all nationalities are eligible for the fellowship and should have a good knowledge of English or any other language related to the course. Fellows must live in Florence for the duration of the fellowships.
The monthly stipend is € 3000 for all Fellows but there is no provision for travel allowances.
- Toshiba Fellowship Programme
This programme offers unique opportunity for qualified PhD level scientist to join Toshiba’s research and development laboratories in Japan. Successfully running since 1983, the programme is for EU nationality candidates who have completed their PhD. This is also a great opportunity as it gives the Fellows one step towards a reputed career in Toshiba.
The accepted Fellows will be assigned in one of the research facilities which are located within one and a half hours of central Tokyo. They will be assigned one mentor who will assist in their research work.
The salary that the Fellows will receive is around 10 million JPY per annum. There is also a generous relocation allowance and benefits package. The company will support the visa application process and flights to Japan.
- Canon Foundation Research Fellowship
The Fellowship Programme of Canon grants up to 15 fellowships to highly qualified European and Japanese Researchers. European Fellows are expected to pursue their research work in Japan and vice versa.
The Fellowship is eligible for all Europeans who have obtained at least a Master’s Degree. The period of Fellowship is from three months to one year.
The funding is based upon the quality of the research plan, which usually ranges from 22,500 Euro to 27,500 Euro per year.
