Mc Gill, a public research intensive university in Montreal of Quebec, Canada was created in 1821. The institute was named after James McGill whose legacy in 1813 shaped the university’s vision.
The McGill University campus was set up at the Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue in Montreal, while the main campus was built in Downtown Montreal at the bottom of the Mount Royal.
McGill University is one of the most prestigious universities in Canada, she is the only non-American member of the association of American Universities. Also this institute amongst all Canadian universities is the lone member of the association that comprises of 26 of the world’s top universities; The Global University Leaders Forum.
McGill University is also an internationally diverse institute with almost 30% of her students from other countries around the world.
This institute has produced some of the most astounding alumnus in history including Nobel laureates, 3 Canadian prime ministers, Canadian Supreme court justices, international leaders, winners of Grammies, Academy awards and Pulitzer prizes. Olympic medalists have also been produced from McGill University considering it was one of the varsity sports pioneers in history.
According to the Maclean’s university rankings for 2017, McGill is the 1st in Canada for medical/doctoral courses. The Times Higher Education World University 2016 positioned McGill at the 42nd in the world not so far off from QS world university rankings for 2016 which placed her at the 30th best university in the world. In Canada she has been ranked 1st and 2nd 14 years in a row by Re$earch Infosource 2016 for Canada’s top 50 research universities.
Other Gold medals on the neck of the McGill University are; The breakthrough on divisibility of atoms, the creation of Plexiglas and about three sports.
McGill University has a total of ten faculties, twelve professional schools that consist of over 300 programs of study. The faculties are;

- Faculty of management
- Faculty of medicine
- Faculty of religious studies
- Faculty of science
For students located in Canada, a minimum of 6 4U/4M are required and at least 4 of the courses should be done at the 4U level. All grades are considered, even from failed and repeated courses. Also, your OSSD must have been obtained at the date classes begin.
For international students, educational background should be submitted for review and comparison with the Canadian standards by the admission board.
The most important factors taken into consideration for admission into McGill’s graduate school is a Bachelor’s degree from an approved university within or outside Canada with a minimum CGPA 3.0 out of a possible 4.0 or minimum of 3.2 GPA from two previous years of full time study.
However, degrees from universities outside Canada will be assessed using the International Degree Equivalency. Also, in some departments, minimum CGPA may be moved up as the department deems fit.
When to apply?
There are summer and winter take-ins but not every department offers that so check the course you’ll like to apply for first.
Students from Quebec high schools and CEGEP applicant are allowed to start applying from December but the deadline is the 1st of March except in a few departments while Ontario high school applicants are given a February 1 deadline, this deadline also applies to other schools in Canada.
The deadline for international students is January 15 while you can transfer your important documents before March 15.
English Proficiency Requirements
At McGill’s the primary language of instruction is English but if you meet the following requirements, you don’t need to take an English proficiency test;
- If English is your mother tongue /first language
- If you obtained a graduate or undergraduate degree in Canada, U.S or any recognized institution that uses English at the primary language of instruction
- You’ve lived, schooled or worked for four consecutive years in a country where English is the primary language
Note that you may also arrange to take your classes or examinations in French except in courses with understanding of English Language as an objective.
If you don’t meet up with the requirements, you may be required to provide proof of English proficiency. These are the acceptable mediums;
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
- Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)
- University of Cambridge (ESOL) Certificate of Proficiency
- Edexcel London Test of English
- McGill Certificate of Proficiency(English)
Other basic requirements are;
- Undergraduate degrees from only approved universities and colleges
- Applications made very early through the online application portal with a non- refundable fee of $110.29
- Don’t select both thesis and non- thesis while applying except you’re applying for mechanical engineering
- The application must then be approved by the admission board
- Other requirements are course specific.
