The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) was founded by Dr. Shigeyoshi MATSUMAE (1901-1991) in 1979. And MIF started the MIF Research Fellowship Program in 1980. The purpose of the Foundation is to invite active young research workers of outstanding character, without regard to sex, race, religion, ideology or nationality, to Japan. By deepening their understanding of Japan, and establishing links of trust and friendship, MIF seeks to make a real contribution to permanent peace throughout the world.
The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) is delighted to administer the MIF Fellowship Program for people of non-Japanese nationality with interests in the natural sciences, engineering and medicine.
Applications are encouraged from eligible candidates from all countries of the world as MIF has started receiving application for the “2018 Research Fellowship Program”.
Eligibility
To be eligible, candidates must:
- be of non-Japanese nationality;
- have a Doctorate degree;
- be 49 years old or under;
- not have been in Japan previously;
- have firm positions and professions in their home nations

Participating Institutions
Applicants are free to select any Japanese host institutions (university research laboratories, national research institutions or the corresponding facilities of private industry)
Fields of study
Postgraduate research in the natural science, engineering and medicine are given first priority
Number of awards
The number of fellowships is about 20 persons each year
Sponsorship duration
For a period of from three (3) to six (6) months. The commencing month and ending month should be between April 2018 to March 2019 (e.g. 5 months from June 2018 to October 2018)
Scholarship benefits
Fellowship covers:
- Stipend for research and stay,
- Insurance,
- Air transportation (a round-trip air ticket to/from Tokyo) and
- Lump sum on arrival
Method of Application
MIF has a policy of providing fellowships to researchers who have never been in Japan in past/present. If you obtained your academic degree(s) in Japan, you CANNOT apply successfully for the MIF fellowship program.
