Failure is always an unwanted aspect of student life. Some say it is unavoidable; but to me it is avoidable if the student wants to do so and seeks active help in this regard. There are two categories of students at risk of failure: actively failing students and passively failing students. Actively failing students are those who attend classes attentively, struggle hard with assignments and put all the efforts to pass. They are the ones who underperform some specific assignment or subject and seek some kind of help. Passively failing students are those whose names are enrolled in class but they occasionally attend classes, just want to pass by hook or crook, without putting their time and effort. They are hardly engaged in learning process. They do not even try to find help to pass on. Both the students can avoid the failure by putting concentration and attention in case of passive type.
Good teachers are always willing to save their students from failure by guiding and giving necessary tips to manage study works and to take time for other healthy activities. It is easy to handle actively failing students rather than passively failing students. Teachers can employ a set of techniques to identify and assist the students at risk of failure:
- A significantly greater number of students fail science, engineering and math courses that are taught like a lecture incorporating so-called active learning that expects them to participate in discussions and problem-solving beyond what they have memorized. All students are not active listeners. So you must prepare your lecture as a kind of class activity specifically for the mentioned subjects.
- Do not blame students for their failure. Rather, be like “let’s pinpoint where the fault lies resolve your problem”.
- Conduct a test after four to five weeks of start course. Prepare a test that can assess both categories of failing students, qualities and deficiencies of students as well as a test that can help you to clearly convey your method of academic course and its assessment. It’ll help you greatly to identify the students at risk. Once you did it, identify the reason behind by talking to your students very friendly (whether it is course specific or general). Then you can think about the strategy to tackle them individually.
- Do not involve the parents too early. Try yourself first, conduct a second test and then involve the parents. Involving the parents at first stage can pressurize the students as parents may scold and students can lose temperament towards study feeling it an insult. And do not forget to counsel parents for how they should help their child to avoid failure.
- Encourage you students for their smaller efforts. Motivate to do more and big by quoting some influencing example and trying to practice the same. You have to become a student of their level to understand and resolve their problems.
- If there is any psychological reason for risk of failure, prepare a list of such students and conduct a session with education psychologists to motivate students and to make them to hold on the failure reasons.
- Ask them to complete the classwork on daily basis and check it regularly. Remember, do not be bossy.
- Teach them techniques to improve memory.
- Give your students enough confidence to discuss their problems with you whenever they want. For this you need to become a mature friend, not a teacher. List the problems of individual students, take time to think about and then go for tour final step.
- Tell them about your failures and that how you improved and flourished.
- Ask them to play with birds and animals. It’ll improve their stamina and mental health.
