Today, I’m going to explain in a simplified manner how a beginner can apply for a scholarship and win it.
Step 1: Prepare a scholarship essay
Since scholarship essay is an important part of a scholarship application, one should start writing it even before he starts searching for scholarships. This is because scholarship selection committee uses it in selecting candidates for award. So it has to be properly written. There is nothing wrong in producing as many drafts as possible as this will ensure you produce an excellent error-free essay. Give your final write-up to your lecturer to check for mistakes.
Step2: Start searching for scholarships
The next step to take after preparing your essay is to start searching for advertised scholarships and apply as soon as possible. But the question is, how can one search for scholarships? I know a lot of people will be asking this question. Well, you can search for scholarships on national tabloids or by using the search engines. You can use search engines like Google, Ask or Bing. When searching, use keywords like undergraduate scholarships, engineering scholarships, 2013 scholarships etc. The search engine will bring out thousands of results matching the keywords you have used.
Step3: Apply for scholarships
Now that you’ve searched and found scholarships you are eligible to apply, the next thing is to start your application as soon as possible. Start by reading through the scholarship and find out the requirements. Requirements for scholarship application differ from one scholarship to the other, but in most cases, the following will be demanded;
- An offer letter(if the scholarship is issued by a college).
- A good scholarship essay.
- An international passport(optional in most cases).
- Reference letters(usually two) from your lecturers or people that know you well.
- Results and transcripts.
Endeavor to make these documents handy before you start your application as you may be required to upload them during the online application process. And when filling the application forms, provide all information as accurately as you can while making sure that all required fields have been filled. If the instruction is that you print out the form, please do so and send it with other documents to the address stated there on or before the deadline. Send the scholarship organization an e-mail asking if they have received your application. This is to ensure that your application don’t get lost in transit.
