The German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) offers yearly scholarship to young researchers, and is this year offering 60 doctoral scholarships to young scientists from all disciplines for carrying out research in the field of environmental protection. The Scholarships runs for a period of three years. Scholarship is awarded initially for a period of a year but subject to one year extension after a satisfactory progress review. The beneficiary is expected to in addition to having a slightly higher than average university degree, required to choose thesis topics that are relevant and would provide solutions to problems of environmental protection and preservation of nature. Scholarship will be in a German University and it is targeted at international and German researchers.
About scholarship
All environmentally based topics are welcomed but must meet minimum criteria. In addition to the natural and engineering sciences, the following fields are welcomed: social sciences, humanities, business law and Inter-disciplinary themes majoring in sustainable development are particularly desirable.
The DBU gives preference to work plans and schedules that are achievable within a three year duration based on recommendation of the academic supervisor of the candidate.
Eligibility
To qualify for the scholarship, the applicant is expected to meet the following criteria:
- The applicant is yet to commence his/her thesis
- For international applicants, a sound knowledge of German would be an added advantage so as to make room for integration into DBU scholarship network.
- In addition to a higher university Degree, it is expected that the chosen thesis topic is of high relevance and can contribute to solving problems in environmental protection and conservation

What the Scholarship covers
Since June 2009, the scholarship awards a monthly grant of €940. In addition, a monthly allowance of €210 covering for material and travel costs is reimbursed. In exceptional cases, reimbursement will be granted for extra materials in small scale. A detailed cost plan will be given at request. Scholarship recipients with children will receive a child allowance worth €200 for first child and €150 for other kids. Fellows with child / children may, on request in special cases such as birth, illness, or a family break be granted a leave during the duration of the scholarship. This leave is limited to maximum 12 months limited per child
Length of Scholarship:
This doctoral scholarships runs for a period of three years. Each scholarship is initially awarded for a period of up to one year. After reviewing the progress of the research work, there shall be an extension of one year each.
