Cost of Study and living in Italy

Universities and other Higher Education Institutes establish their own fees but in the case of university education there is a legal minimum fee for enrolment and maximum level for student contributions to costs and services, which cannot exceed 20%of state funding.
The average fees a student has to pay is somewhere between 850 euro and 1,000 euro per year since this varies from one university to another and also depends on the chosen course of study. Private universities are clearly much more expensive.
Admission to “master universitari” and other specialisation courses also have much higher fees. Doctoral students who receive a grant from the university do not pay fees, but non- grant holders are required to pay the fees, which will vary again according to the university chosen.

Undergraduate studies
If you have successfully completed upper secondary studies in one of the signatory countries of the Lisbon convention, are in possession of a valid school leaving certificate and qualify for higher education studies in your home country, you also qualify for higher education studies in Italy. However, you are requested to prove your level of knowledge in the Italian language. In some cases, you are also requested to take additional qualifying courses for some competitive study programs.
Master’s studies
If you are applying for a Master’s program at university in Italy, you are required to be in possession of a relevant Bachelor’s or equivalent degree diploma.
PhD studies
In the event you are applying for doctoral studies at university in Italy, you are required to be in possession of a relevant diploma or Master’s degree program.

How to apply for university studies in Italy as a non-EU student
Undergraduate studies
If you plan to enroll in full time undergraduate studies at a higher education institution in Italy for the first time and you are not an EU student, you will have to submit your application by following the steps as explained below:-

02 Contact the institution you are interested in, and ask for a prior assessment to learn whether you might be eligible for the study, by presenting the following documents:
The filled-in application form to receive a Letter of Academic Eligibility and Suitability (in Italian, Dichiarazione di Valoro in Loco (DV)). The DV is a certificate that acknowledges your foreign studies prior to applying for university studies in Italy.

03 Once the institution you are interested in informs you might be eligible, you have to submit a pre-application request to the Italian embassy of your country of residence.

04 Once the Italian embassy or consulate has received all the necessary documentation, it will submit your application and documents to the Italian higher education institution you are interested in.

Graduate studies:-
If you would like to apply for graduate studies at university in Italy, you will have to follow the same steps as explained for undergraduate, non-EU students.
