Some colleges are going to hold your essay in high regard, and some colleges will not even read your essay. Some will want details about you, and others will want to see examples of your originality, political allegiance, or bias. You do not need an “excellent” admission essay to get into college, but here is how you write one anyway.
1 – You Can Be Honest In This Case
Honesty is only useful to people that are able to use it to cover their lies. In most cases, it is a good idea to lie and cheat, but within your admission essay, you do not “have” to lie. The admin staff know that you are young and haven’t cured diseases, run football clubs, or invested millions into Japanese small-cap funds. You do not have to make yourself out to be a king/queen amongst the mortals. You do not even have to make your life sound interesting.
2 – Use Research And Writing Tools
You can use reference generators to ensure all of your references are correctly formatted, and the SpellCheckPlus.com tool will help you catch your grammar errors, especially your comma misuses. The Ivory Research team is able to write your essay for you. They allow you to hand in their work as your own to save you the trouble of writing an essay that may never even be read. There are even random idea generators you can find online if you are experiencing a little writer’s block. Many students use Evernote too so they may take notes on their essay during the day, especially if it is going to be a first-person narrative.
3 – Try To Be As Accurate As You Can With The Details
If you are giving personal details, it pays to be accurate with the details. For some reason, some admin staff tends to be very data-centric. They want to know the exact dates and places where and when things happened.
4 – Be Vivid Within Your Essay
Do not try to impress them with big words or creativity, but offer a little vivid language. Show that you are not a robot. Show that you do not simply want to go to their college, show that you have a burning and unquenchable desire to study there because it is only place where you may spread your wings and reach your full potential.
5 – Allow Yourself To Be An Individual
You spent the last three years playing Assassins Creed and writing a blog about it, and yet you still got your schoolwork done. You were told to write about your daily life, but you decided to write about your daily life compared to the person you want to be. Allow yourself to be an individual.
6 – Proofread And Check For Coherency
You are not just checking for spelling and grammar errors. You need to check the flow and the coherency because it is just as important as getting your spelling and grammar correct.
7 – Do Not Be Negative In Any Way
They do not want to hear stories of how you struggled. The admin staff are smart enough to know that the type of people that have lots of bad luck will continue the trend into college, and they don’t want a dopy dropout student that quits because she gets into credit card debt and then spills coffee on her $4500 laptop and throws it on her dorm bed to try and dry it.
8 – Do Not Try To Be Original
This point is so important because it is so counter-intuitive. Whenever students try to be original, they always, ALWAYS, end up writing an admission essay that is a carbon copy of one that has been written by thousands of other students. No matter how original you think you are being–you are not. Ironically, it is the students that “do not try to be original” that create the most unique application essays.
9 – Do Not Put A Quote At The Start Of Your Essay
Unless the college asks for it specifically, do not put one on the application essay. No matter how obscure your quote is, you can be sure the admin staff have heard it and read it hundreds of times. For you, a quote at the start of your essay may feel like a fresh and meaningful statement about you, but for the admin staff, it is just another thing to make them hate their job a little more. It is just another wrinkle on their forehead.
10 – Stop Trying To Impress The Admin Staff
YOU WILL NOT IMPRESS THE ADMIN STAFF!!! It is just a cold, hard fact, and the worst type of essay for admin staff to read is one that tries to impress them. The student may be trying really hard to be clever, or may have used a slew of big/fancy words and clever sentence structures. The student may have tried to be funny, or include lots of college facts in the essay. If you are trying to impress, then you are failing. Instead, write something that is a good read, something that your sister, dad and nana would be happy to read without secretly hating you.
