Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden: Ranking, Tuition Fees, Cost of Living and Admission Procedure

Situated in the heart of Sweden-Gothenburg-Chalmers University of Technology is a world class leading university reputed for her ground-breaking researches in the area of technology, education, management science and other natural sciences. The University was founded in 1829 after a donation by Williams Chalmers, who as at then donated half of his entire fortune to studies in research.

RANKING

In 2011, Chalmers University of Technology was ranked 38th in the world, 1st in Sweden and the 15th in all of Europe by the International Professional Ranking of Higher Education Institutions, which carried out its ranking by the number of alumni of schools who are either CEOs or run any organization that is equivalent to the Fortune Global 500 companies

In what seems to be the latest ranking for Universities, Chalmers was ranked 139th world over by the QS World University Rankings in 2016. As published by Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2016/2017, Chalmers ranked 251-300 of all global universities. As well as being ranked between 201-300 of all universities in the world, in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (2016). And also 201-250 in the latest 2018 rankings of Universities by Times Higher Education.

Aside from the two main campuses, the university conducts research at the Lundberg Laboratory in Gothenburg – which is a renowned center for cellular and molecular research – and at its Onsala Space Observatory, about 30 miles south of the city, which is equipped with tide gauges, radiometers, navigation satellite receivers and a superconducting gravimeter, enabling scientists to study the Earth and the wider universe.

The university also focuses on other research field which includes nanoscience and nanotechnology, the built environment, life science, information and communication technology, and materials science, with Chalmers recently receiving a €10 billion (£8.3 billion) grant from the European Union to carry out research on graphene.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

With an interest in developing students, the University offers different undergraduate and graduate programs. In other to meet up with the prerequisites for the programmesapplied for, candidates must meet the general and specific entry requirements.

Undergraduate’s Admission

Bachelor’s programmes at Chalmers are conducted in Swedish. In order to study one of these programmes one must prove formal knowledge of the Swedish language equivalent to the upper secondary course Swedish 3/B.

You must also fulfil the general entry requirements for Bachelor’s studies and the specific entry requirements for the programme that you want to apply for. It is worthy of note that most programmes at Chalmers require a high level of mathematics, physics and chemistry.

Postgraduate Admission

Candidates must apply via the national admission service’s website. Before you proceed with your application please read the information specific to Chalmers, thereafter, candidates are to adhere to the following;

To be eligible, an applicant must either be a holder of – or be enrolled in his/her last year of studies leading to – a Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Architecture.

Note: The Master’s programme in Entrepreneurship and Business Design is the exception to this rule as this programme admits applicants with Bachelor’s degrees from other fields as well.

Tuition

To be eligible an applicant must either be a holder of – or be enrolled in his/her last year of studies leading to – a Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Architecture.

Note: The Master’s programme in Entrepreneurship and Business Design is the exception to this rule as this programme admits applicants with Bachelor’s degrees from other fields as well.

The degree must be equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree (Kandidatexamen) according to Swedish regulations. It must, amongst other parameters, comprise a minimum of 3 years of full time studies (180 credits).

Applicants who are currently enrolled are welcome to apply given that they, at the time of applying, have a maximum of one semester left before completing their degree. They must anticipate completing their Bachelor’s degree before the start of the Master’s programme.Applicants who are currently enrolled in long Tertiary Education Programmes with no intermediate Bachelor’s degree must have completed at least 80% (i.e. four of five years) of a full Master’s programme before the start of the Chalmers Master’s programme applied for, in order to be eligible.

Other applicants who are currently enrolled in long educational programmes with no intermediate Bachelor’s degree in a Nordic Country are required to have completed at least 3 years out of 5 of a full Master’s programme, in accordance with the “Reykjavik act” of 2004.

Programmes at both Bachelor’s and Master’s level within all subject areas, with the exception of Architecture, cost SEK 70 000/semester (SEK 280 000 total programme fee, four semesters).

The tuition fee for Bachelor’s and Master’s Programmes within the field of Architecture is SEK 95 000 per semester (SEK 380 000 total programme fee, four semesters). Consequently, students admitted to Chalmers’ Master’s Programmes within the field of Architecture, namely Architecture and Urban Design and Design for Sustainable Development, are incurred the aforementioned fee of SEK 95 000 per semester.

Single subject courses cost SEK 2 333/credit, with the exception of courses within the field of Architecture, which cost SEK 3 167/credit.
